So March has started a little slower due to I just completed a walk for CROP. CROP stands for Communities Responind to Overcoming Poverty This was started back in 1947 in the mid west by churches that were trying to help families affected by the war get back on their feet. The first hungar walk was October 17, 1969 in North Dakota and since then it has blossemed in an annual event all over the country with churches working together to help overcome poverty in their area. I was joined on the walk by Miss Atlantic Coast Jessica Kennedy and we proceeded to walk three miles around Deland bringing awareness to this cause at hand. We had a great time and brought much needed attention to the program when we had several residents of the area ask us what we were doing out and about town in sashes. February 19, 2011 was my last day as your reigning Miss Marion County and what a fun experience it was. I've included my farewell speech in this post as a great reminder of what an amazing opportunity this year as been for me. Wow…What can I say; this year has been a journey! This journey for me started in November of 2009 when I finally decided to get serious about experiencing the opportunity of being your next Miss Florida USA and the dream officially started right here on this stage when I was crowned Miss Marion County USA one year ago. I still remember the shock of actually winning; it is still considered one of the brightest spots of my reigning year. I’ve held my crown tightly for a year and honestly, I’m very reluctant to let it go. This was my first chance to after my dream and no one forgets their first. After the Golf Tournament, Jessica and I went to the Five Points of Life 5k and Kids Marathon. We both left our tennis shoes at home but I would have been willing to run in 5 inch heels sadly we couldn't but we did help medal all of the children as they finished their last 1.2 miles of their marathon. The children involved have been running for the past couple of weeks to run a marathon and it was a great opportunity to be involved with. This past Saturday was pretty busy. As my official last day as Miss Marion County I went and volunteered along with Jessica Kennedy Miss Atlantic Coast at a golf tournament that was raising money for the Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County. There, Jessica and I helped to raise over $600 dollars for the raffle tournament thet were holding in about an hour. I was extremely excited for the money we raised and the cause it is helping.
